How do I put my trombone together?

  • Remove the main slide from its case. The main slide is delicate so be careful not to bang it against anything.
  • Remove the bell section.
  • The main slide has two openings: the mouthpiece receptacle (lead pipe) and the connecting sleeve (to the bell section).
  • Insert the connecting sleeve into the bell section and tighten to lock in place. Make sure that the spit-valve on the main slide is always on the bottom.
  • Insert the mouthpiece into the mouthpiece receptacle. Gently twist to the left or right 1/4 turn to secure in place.

Why does my slide stick?

  • The inner slide may need to be cleaned and lubricated. To lubricate, remove the outer slide, so you can expose the inner slide. To clean the inner slide, us a mild house-hold cleaner and soft lint-free cloth.
  • Next, apply a small amount of slide oil to the base of the inner slide and replace the outer slide.
  • Sometimes the inner slide may be bent or the outer slide dented and can cause the slide to not function correctly. It is important to handle the slide with care. The slide can damage very easy, the slightest nick or ding can hinder the performance of the slide.

I can't get any sound out of my trombone. What's wrong?

  • There might be an air leak! Look to the spit-valve on the slide, it may not be closing completely and air could be escaping. Or, the pad on the spit-valve is not sealing completely or missing!
  • Neck check the tuning-slide, make sure it is inserted completely and there is no gaps.
  • Make sure the mouthpiece is fully inserted in the mouthpiece receptacle and there are no gaps.

How do I tune my trombone?

  • Make sure that the tuning-slide is pushed all the way in.
  • Use a chromatic type tuner.
  • The tuning pitch for the Bb trombone is Bb, played using the 1st slide position in the 3rd partial.
  • Not every pitch on the trombone will be in tune!
  • Fine-tuning of the intonation is done with the embouchure and the main tuning slide.
